Counting butterflies
We have been taking part in the Big Butterfly Count over the past couple of weeks. The idea is to record which butterflies you see during 15 minutes, to give a snapshot view on butterfly population and how they are faring, especially after last year’s washout summer and this year’s cold spring. We have really enjoyed taking part, and the…

Sunshine
What a glorious week it’s been, with long hot days. Cold and rain feels a life time away! The church temperature has reached a balmy 21C… just perfect, cool not chilled. It’s been a long time since it’s felt like this and thank goodness we aren’t cold anymore! We’ve been having the church doors open, to let the warm air…

Spotted Spotted Flycatchers!
Today I finally managed to positively identify a little brown bird that I kept catching a glimpse of in the churchyard. I suspected that it was a Spotted Flycatcher, by it’s distinctive flight. They fly out from their perch and in a flurry catch a fly and return to their perch. I used my zoom lense to get a good…

Bistort and bees
Bistort is now flowering in the graveyard. There’s a clump of it growing in the south side of the churchyard. I really like its pink spires amongst the gravestones. The bees like it too… Image of the Week #39

Laburnum
There are two Laburnum trees in the churchyard and you would hardly notice them nestled in amongst the other trees but at this time of year they look splendid draped in thousands of yellow flowers and bees buzzing all around them. Image of the Week #38

Blue Tits nesting in the wall
Walking up the drive this morning, Littlest and I spotted a blue tit flying out of a hole in the chancel wall of the church. Some of the pointing (cement = bad!) has fallen away and the blue tits have made a nest inside the wall! Quite a full nest by the sounds of it as we could hear…

Welshpool Series Part 4: St Mary’s churchyard
St Mary’s Church, Welshpool The Parish Church of St Mary of the Salutation is a prominent landmark in the town, especially with its elevated position. We have a great view of St Mary’s, looking over the town from Christ Church. Parts of the church originate from the 13th Century and you can read more about it’s architectural history here The…

Searching for Spring
It is very wet and blustery today and Spring still feels a long time in coming. We seem to be craving signs of spring at the moment, in the absence of warmer temperatures and sunshine. The churchyard is full of the song of the newly arrived Chiffchaffs which is very uplifting. Swallows were flying over Dairy Pool near Powis Castle…
