Up in the belfry there is a signature of possibly one of the original church builders. We spent the afternoon re-pointing the walls up there. It is so exposed that the mortar inside the walls gets washed away. There is evidence of a lot of previous re-pointing work up there. Image of the Week #82

Thankfully the sun is shining, it’s not raining and all is still and calm. There have been some quite terrifying moments this week where it just didn’t feel safe to be inside or out due to the extreme weather that we’ve all had to endure. The whole church seemed to be rattling and straining under the force of the…

And now inside the roof…
Once the euphoria of the completion of the roofing works on the south aisle roof waned, it was time to motivate ourselves to get it insulated (to comply with building regulations) and actually get it finished from the inside. Over the years lime sarking had built up on the lath and plaster ceiling. Before insulating the roof, we decided it…

A little less leaky…
You may of noticed rather a lot of scaffolding around the church during recent weeks. This was due to roofing works on the south aisle roof. Ten years ago we inherited this job and we have continually patch repaired it to prevent the drip, drip sounds we have grown to dread. Inside the evidence of leaky roofs was increasingly…

Up high
Taking advantage of the scaffolding that is in place for the roof repairs we are having done at the moment, I was able to capture this unusual view. Note the new pointing (lime!) – its all getting fixed up slowly! Image of the Week #58

Landing lights
A house update is long overdue, so I thought I’d show you how the landing has progressed. Over the summer the ceiling and walls have been painted, along with the railing along the edge of the landing (and boy did that take a long time!). The walls are painted in Farrow and Ball’s ‘Pointing’ and the railing in ‘Borrowed Light’.…

Repointing
This weekend was dedicated to doing some much needed repointing on the tower parapet wall. The top of the tower is the most exposed part of the building, getting the worst of the weather from all directions. Sons #1 and #2 worked very hard helping to carry all the equipment and buckets of lime mortar up to the top of…

A little bit finished!
Finally we have a finished room! Its all very exciting, especially for Owen who has vacated ‘The Hut’ and moved in! It took a while to do all the finishing touches like skirting boards, hanging and painting doors, but its all been worth it as we’re really pleased with the finished result. Its wonderful to see all our ideas come…

Drainage works complete!
Hurrah….at last, the epic rainwater drainage works are virtually complete. After months of toil and for the first time in over 30 years all the rainwater is now being channeled away from the church. We have installed two large soakaways and have weaved our way through the graveyard with a web of pipework linking the gullies with the soakaways. We…

Frequently Asked Questions
Why did you buy a church? We weren’t looking to buy a church or even a house. We spotted Christ Church for sale in a local estate agents window and drove around Welshpool looking for it. We could hardly believe our eyes when we eventually found it. We made an appointment to view inside and upon entering the building, completely…
