From Hut to House

The christmas kitchen
Christmas is that marker in the year, the deadline that pushes us to get as much as possible of the downstairs of the House completed. We traditionally celebrate Christmas in the House as the Hut is too small and cramped for a tree and decorations. Instead of the Yule Log, we light the Froeling boiler and enjoy the warmth…

painting and lights
Ta-da! The dining area of the House, with its ginormous ceiling is painted and the lights are up. The ceiling has been painted a stoney colour to link with the tones of the floor and to create a sense of cosiness in this vast space. The shade is Farrow & Ball’s ‘Joa’s White’ and the walls are ‘Pointing’. The…

The master bedroom progresses
The on going painting of the House progresses with the ‘master bedroom’ walls all finished! And the tower scaffold which has been in this room for years is down, making the room feel much bigger! The original church walls have been lime washed and the new walls painted in Farrow & Ball’s ‘Pointing’. As the walls get painted, Karl follows…

One finished wall
A small part of the partition wall between House and Nave is finished… and has lights too! It has been a complicated wall to build (and plaster!) as it fills the large archway. Looking through the windows you can see into the Master Bedroom (formerly the Gallery), but as the room is at least double height. In keeping…

kitchen build – part 1
Mid December and in mid manic festive preparation time, we clear the ‘kitchen’ area to make way for carpenter Paul and Karl to commence the kitchen build. During recent weeks the ceiling has been painted and the walls lime washed; the antique Holophane lights hung and the air extraction ducting installed. The Christmas tree was a little in the way,…

switches…
We have got to the exciting part of house building, where we can start adding little details… such as light switches. Or maybe we’ve been slogging away at this project for far too long that we get rather over excited at installing light switches! Karl spotted these switches on Ebay some years ago, and they’ve been sitting in a…

Landing lights
A house update is long overdue, so I thought I’d show you how the landing has progressed. Over the summer the ceiling and walls have been painted, along with the railing along the edge of the landing (and boy did that take a long time!). The walls are painted in Farrow and Ball’s ‘Pointing’ and the railing in ‘Borrowed Light’.…
