A view not seen for 157 years!
Last week the large Cedar tree was cut down – which I shall write a post about shortly. It has revealed a view of the church which hasn’t been seen for 157 years (Fred and Owen counted the rings!) Image of the Week #51

Painted landscapes
We were stuck indoors today due to heavy rain, so had to make do with the landscape views which have been painted onto the stained glass windows. This is part of a window in memory of Lady Violet of Powis Castle and is one I never tire of looking at, as it has so much detail and pattern. Image of…

Quarry view
During the wonderful weather this week, we’ve been exploring the hills and meadows around Welshpool, including going up through Bron-y-Buckley Woods and across the fields to the top of the old quarry. It was funny to be standing on the very hill that the stone came from to build the church, whilst looking at it. Image of the Week #45

Roses
Along side the south aisle of the church runs a flower bed, planted up I believe, by the Head Gardener of Powis Castle many years ago. Next to this flower bed lies the Herbert family tombs, including three of the Earls. At this time of year it looks beautiful, full of pinks and whites. The roses always stand out and…

Hold on tight and try not to look down!
We erected a scaffold tower to complete some exterior works, and I thought it would be a good opportunity to get some high level shots of the church. However, at the top of the ladder I really didn’t fancy the idea of climbing any further on my own, so this is as high as I got! Not high enough for…

The Coronation window
The Coronation window. 60 years ago today was the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. There’s an interesting article by the BBC here about the ‘dazzling spectacle, solemn pledges and soaring music’ on the day. Image of the Week #37

Welshpool Series Part 4: St Mary’s churchyard
St Mary’s Church, Welshpool The Parish Church of St Mary of the Salutation is a prominent landmark in the town, especially with its elevated position. We have a great view of St Mary’s, looking over the town from Christ Church. Parts of the church originate from the 13th Century and you can read more about it’s architectural history here The…

On this day… Lady Violet, Countess of Powis
On this day in 1929, Lady Violet of Powis Castle tragically died in a car accident at the age of 63. I believe the accident occured near the Rhallt on the outskirts of Welshpool. This was a devastating loss to her husband, George Herbert, 4th Earl of Powis. He installed a memorial window for her here in the south east corner…

Easter window
Angels with Mary Magdalene at the Empty Tomb. A O Hemming, 1892. An Easter themed Image of the Week. This is a close up of a stained glass window in the North aisle. Wishing you all a good long Easter weekend. Ours consists of spending time with family, a couple of bracing walks, an egg hunt in the garden, followed…

In the churchyard… the Baron of the Exchequer!
One of the most distinctive gravestones in the churchyard is of The Hon. Sir William Henry Watson, the Baron of the Exchequer. He was serving in Welshpool as a Justice of the Assize, when he was ‘seized with apoplexy’ and died on this day, March 13th, 1860. He was born in Northumberland and had a very accomplished career, after being…
